H.W. Brands, professor of History at Texas A&M University, tells Todd about the influence and accomplishments of Benjamin Franklin. He discusses the relationship between Great Britain and the colonies, Franklin's initial support of the British government, and what happened to make Franklin change his mind and work for secession. Brands' book is "The First American: The Life And Times Of Benjamin Franklin".

Witold Rybczynski, journalist, talks with Todd about the history of the screwdriver and the screw. He explains how the screw started as a specialized nail and advanced to a wooden screw with threads.
